For The Love Of Vinyl!!!
For The Love Of Vinyl!!!
I recently had the opportunity to DJ a really cool bar in Los Angeles called Gold Line - located in Highland Park.
What makes this night of DJing so different? How about the fact that you can ONLY play the records on the wall. No laptops, CDs or any of your personal collection. There are over 7500 albums to choose from - Reggae, Hip Hop, Samba, 80’s Rock and so many more obscure genres and artists that you will likely have never heard in your life!! Sounds like fun right? It was but there was a couple other important things to note to make the night interesting. The records were NOT sorted alphabetically or by genre. You must pre-pull some music to get you going and then it’s game on searching for music that would set a cool vibe and be interesting. It was strongly discouraged to play anything that was current pop music. The goal was to play music that people may not know and slip in some classics to make it fun.
During the evening, a fellow visiting from NYC walked up and was sharing his positive commentary about the music I was playing and then asked if I would be interested in DJing an event he is having in NYC next month. I was FLATTERED beyond words!! I quickly looked up the date and realized I was booked for an event the same weekend! UGH!!!
OK!! OK!! Back to the evening!
As the night began to wind down - I was really in a groove and I didn’t want the night to end and neither did the guests! So many happy faces and a ton of HIGH FIVES on the way out the door!! TOTAL SUCCESS!!!
What you don’t know about Gold Line - The owner/founder is a DJ named Peanut Butter Wolf (Chris Manak) from San Jose. He is also the founder of Stones Throw Records located above Gold Line, and is considered one of the most important figures in hip hop’s underground “golden era”. Check out his classic release called “My Vinyl Weighs A Ton.”
